George Vassilakis: Curiosity as the key to professional development
Teacher development is part and parcel of all teachers’ lives, provided they take interest in their profession. Far from depending on accessing and processing ‘received knowledge’ produced by ivory tower experts, teacher development is fed by intellectual curiosity and involves self-reflection, critical enquiry, and classroom-oriented innovation. In this workshop, we will define teacher development and outline the types of activities that it involves and then give examples of ten paths to professional development that any teacher can try, wherever they are. Participants will explore and evaluate development options and come up with their own professional development plan.
Saturday 22 May, 15:00 – 15:30
Alexander Makarios: The Unbearable Lightness of Being … Experienced
In this talk, we will be exploring the concept of becoming an ‘experienced’ teacher and its fickle nature. We will be looking closely at a wide range of ways in which we – both as centre directors and as teachers – can motivate ourselves and our staff to continue developing professionally without losing momentum and, most importantly, without letting any classroom event go to waste.
